Investigating Cultural Behavior

What prevents you from visiting cultural events and what motivates you? How often do you go to culture events and what do you like best? And how does it change over time?

These questions - and much more - are being answered by the Cultural Behavior Inquiry. Cultural behavior is a large sociological survey conducted for the first time in 2023 on a representative sample of the Prague population. It means that we have answers to the questions we ask ourselves about preferences, interests, motivations and barriers to attending cultural events. We want to repeat it every two years so we can track changes over time.

We map cultural preferences and behavior of Prague residents

The Cultural Policy declares that: “Prague is an example of how to collect and work with data in culture. “ And in another place again: “Prague will know the audience and the barriers to attendance. They will set up a comprehensive system for collecting data in culture, including their regular updating. “ The research was conducted with the ambition to create for the first time a segmentation of the Prague population in terms of cultural behavior. The result is six cultural segments, which are described in more detail in the attached documents. The most extensive interpretation is offered by the report MAPK2O: Cultural behavior of the inhabitants of the city of Prague, prepared by STEM — Institute of Empirical Research, which at the same time supplied and professionally protected the data collection. A summary based on this research report is also available.

We also looked at the collected data from a specific point of view: one of the questions concerned knowledge and visits to 16 specific cultural organizations established by the City of Prague. We were interested in how visitors to these organizations differ from the rest of the population — in behavior, demographic characteristics, cultural preferences, etc. You can read this in the report 2024 Visitors to the established scene in the section Data Analytics.
